Abstract
Pedestrian presence is considered one of the most important indicators of the quality of public spaces and the vitality of urban corridors and is influenced by a set of physical, functional, perceptual, and behavioral factors. From the perspective of spatial architecture, the quality and organization of public space can play a role in how citizens experience and use the environment and the formation of collective life in it. Despite the expansion of studies in this field, the findings of previous research are scattered and a comprehensive framework for classifying factors affecting pedestrian presence has not been presented. Therefore, the present study was conducted with the aim of identifying, classifying, and conceptually organizing factors affecting pedestrian presence in urban corridors. This study is applied in terms of purpose and qualitative in nature and was conducted with a systematic review approach based on the PRISMA 2020 guidelines. After a systematic search of studies in Scopus and Google Scholar, 1760 scientific records were identified, and after screening, 27 eligible articles were finally included in the qualitative content analysis. The extracted data were analyzed using MAXQDA 2024 software through an open and axial coding process and organized into conceptual components and subcomponents. The research findings showed that the factors affecting pedestrian presence can be classified into five main components, including physical-spatial characteristics, environmental quality and space performance, pedestrian perception and experience, pedestrian presence and activity, and urban outcomes. The findings also indicate that physical-spatial characteristics, especially urban form and road network, play the greatest role in shaping pedestrian presence, and other components, in interaction with this physical context, provide the basis for realizing outcomes such as urban vitality and social interactions. The main achievement of this research is to provide a conceptual framework and systematic classification of factors affecting pedestrian presence, which can be used as a basis for future research and as a guide for planning and designing human-centered urban corridors.
